"The Support unit for International Fisheries & Aquatic Research was founded in in March 1998 and is based alongside the Fisheries Department of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), in Rome.
Financed by contributions from a range of donors, including the United Kingdom (DFID), Norway, Canada, Iceland, The World Bank and UNDP, SIFAR was set up in response to recommendations made both by the major donor-funded Study of International Fisheries Research and a series of donor meetings.
SIFAR’s mission statement is responsive research for responsible fisheries, reflecting both the need to address demand-led activities and the principles laid out in the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries."
