Definition:
Estimate of the amount of a substance in food and/or drinking water, expressed
on a body weight basis that can be ingested daily over a lifetime without
appreciable health risk to the consumer on the basis of all the known facts at
the time of the evaluation. It is usually expressed in milligrams of the
chemical per kilogram of body weight. ADIs are used for substances that have a
reason to be found in food (as opposed to a contaminant - see TDI) and as such,
include additives, pesticide residues and veterinary drugs in foods.
