Definition:
3-Chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX) is a member of the
halogenated hydroxyfuranone class. It is a water disinfection by product when
drinking water is chlorinated, formed by the reaction of chlorine with complex
organic matter in water. MX has been identified in chlorinated effluents of pulp
mills.
