Definition:

A genus of mosquito, some species of which can transmit human malaria.

There are approximately 400 species of Anopheles throughout the world, only about 60 are vectors of malaria under natural condition. Only female mosquitoes drink blood, usually to fuel the production of eggs. Female mosquitoes bite usually between sunset and sunrise.
