In the environment, boron is present in the form of borate, combined with
oxygen and other elements. Borates are salts or esters of boric acid. They are
widely found in nature, and are present in oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal,
shale and soils.
Commercially important borates include: borax, boric acid, sodium perborate,
and the minerals ulexite, and colemanite.
