Haemoglobin

Definition:

A protein found in the red blood cells [of most vertebrates] that is responsible for carrying oxygen around the body. Haemoglobin picks up the oxygen in the lungs, and then releases it in the muscles and other tissues where it is needed. Haemoglobin also contains iron which is critical for it to work properly.
