Plasmodium falciparum is one of the four distinct species of the malaria
parasite that affect humans. The Plasmodium falciparum parasite gives rise to
infections that may rapidly become life-threatening, causing the most severe
form of malaria.
It is found in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world, especially in Africa.
